Outdoor play space brings joy to young patients at Wansbeck Hospital

Michelle, whose son Arlie has spent significant time under the care of Northumbria Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust, has seen first-hand the difference recent improvements are making to young patients.

Arlie’s visits to Wansbeck General Hospital gave Michelle a unique perspective – both as a parent and as a member of staff. She recalls that, before refurbishment, the children’s courtyard was not a suitable space for play or relaxation.

However, thanks to donations from supporters of Bright Charity, the courtyard has been completely reimagined.

The updated space now features soft, colourful flooring, age-appropriate toys and vibrant window vinyls, all designed to create a safe and welcoming environment for children receiving care.

Michelle said the changes have had a noticeable impact, helping to brighten what can often be a stressful time for young patients and their families.

The improvements are part of ongoing efforts by Bright Charity to enhance hospital environments across Northumbria, ensuring they better meet the emotional and developmental needs of children.

Supporters’ generosity continues to play a vital role in funding projects like this – transforming clinical spaces into areas where children can feel more relaxed, comfortable and able to play.
