A new community gardening project is taking root at The Alnwick Garden, bringing people together to learn new skills, connect with nature, and create a space that supports both people and wildlife.
Taking place over six weekly sessions on Thursday mornings, participants will work together in the Roots & Shoots community garden to help build a new wildlife-friendly space designed to grow food, herbs, and flowers. The garden, created from a design by one of our volunteers, has a strong climate resilience theme and aims to inspire people with ideas they can recreate in their own back gardens to support biodiversity and grow their own produce.
Throughout the programme, participants will gain hands-on experience in a range of gardening activities including habitat creation, seed sowing, planting, harvesting, and hard landscaping. As the garden gradually develops week by week, individuals will not only learn practical gardening skills but also gain experience that could support future volunteering or employment opportunities.
Gardening offers far more than simply growing plants. Spending time outdoors and connecting with nature has been shown to improve mental wellbeing, reduce stress and anxiety, encourage gentle physical activity, and create opportunities for social connection. Growing food from seed to harvest can also provide a real sense of achievement, confidence, and purpose, while helping people better understand where their food comes from and how small changes can positively impact the environment.
The sessions are designed to be welcoming and accessible for people of all abilities, creating a friendly and supportive atmosphere where everyone can enjoy the benefits of being outside, learning together, and helping something grow.
