Our Stories

A wonderful two hours!

Gordon has been attending the Gentlemen’s Garden for the past 18 months, a programme supported by the Bright Garden Appeal, and during that time, he has gained not only new horticultural skills but also greater knowledge and confidence in his own abilities.

Each week, Gordon learns new gardening skills and techniques that he can put into practice at home. He has taken what he has learned back to his own front and back gardens, where he can see the results of his hard work for himself. Being able to put his new skills into practice and watch his gardens develop is something he takes great pride in.

A particular source of inspiration for Gordon is one of our senior gardeners, George, known as “Swordy”, whose wealth of gardening knowledge and experience he greatly admires. Gordon values not only George’s expertise but also the support and encouragement he offers, describing him as someone for whom “nothing is a bother”.

The enjoyment Gordon gets from the Gentlemen’s Garden is something he is keen to share with the people closest to him. He regularly invites friends and family to visit and see the garden for themselves. Visitors have been struck by the beautiful setting, particularly the backdrop of the castle, as well as the welcoming atmosphere created by the shared tools and free refreshments.

For Gordon, those two hours each week have become something to look forward to.

“Even though the sessions are only two hours a week, they’re a wonderful two hours to look forward to. I’ve learned so much that I can take home and use in my own garden, and to George, nothing is a bother.”

The Gentlemen’s Garden has given Gordon the opportunity to learn, grow in confidence and put his new skills into practice, while spending time with others who share his passion for gardening. Most importantly, it is something he looks forward to each week and takes real pride in being part of. Support from the Bright Garden Appeal helps make programmes like the Gentlemen’s Garden possible, providing opportunities for people like Gordon to learn new skills, build confidence and enjoy being part of a welcoming community.
